Meet Our Client: Made In Me LLP

This month we'd like to introduce you to our client Made In Me LLP. We've been talking to their Managing Director, James Huggins, about how they got started and their development of fantastic apps, books and toys for children.

We’ll start with an easy one…  when was Made In Me LLP established?

We started Made in Me four years ago now, at the end of 2009.

What’s your elevator pitch?

Made in Me is devoted to exploring how technology can create new ways for children to experience the magic of stories. The mainstream adoption of new technology is creating exciting opportunities for families to access familiar forms of interactive media as well as completely new ones. Whether we're creating apps that allow children to create their own versions of classic fairy tales or designing altogether new interactive story formats our passion for storytelling is at the heart of what we do.

What is the one piece of advice that you would give to someone just about to go into business on their own?

Remember you and your team are the business' most valuable resources. Look after them.

What is the best business decision that you’ve ever made?

And the worst…?  (If you’re prepared to share!)

Assuming a quality product is enough. I admit this is not exactly a revelation and it's something I understood intellectually from the beginning. I suppose in some way I allowed myself to think that a great product would sell itself, that customers would spread the word like a social media forest fire. Yeah, that didn't happen. I think the real lesson was that just because a customer loves what you do doesn't necessarily mean they'll tell anyone. The conversation around your business, the PR and the Comms are just as important as the product itself. If you aren't clear exactly how this side of your strategy will work, find someone who is!

What are you going to do differently over the next 12 months? (Particularly in light of the current economic climate)

Given my answer to the previous question we're putting a lot of time and effort into our Comms strategy. I'm excited about this because as much as we enjoy making great products, we want them to be experienced (and bought) by the largest possible audience.


And finally, what do you most value about working with Waterfront? 

That's an easy one. From the very first meeting we ever had I knew these were folk like us that above all else wanted to do great work. Sometimes you just want to chat, ask advice, get a second opinion without the fear that your on the clock and the conversation is being deliberately prolonged. Made in Me is my second start up and I've always found professional services tricky to get right. I love being able to recommend lawyers when people ask me - I never could before meeting Carole and the gang at Waterfront.
