Consumer Contracts

The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 came into force on 13 June 2014.

The new regulations apply to goods, services (including downloads and software) bought by consumers, including purchases made online, at a distance, or away from a business’ premises. They require businesses to give consumers specific information during the sales process and follow strict rules in relation to the order process, delivery, cancellation and refunds and replace the Distance Selling Regulations.

If you sell to consumers, it’s important to review the new regulations and make sure your business complies. If you don’t, you could risk disgruntled customers, damage to your reputation and the costs of putting things right. You might also capture the attentions of Trading Standards and the Competition and Markets Authority, which have the powers to force compliance.
