Phil Leonard

As an associate in the intellectual property and disputes teams, Phil assists with litigation regarding intellectual property (IP) rights.

Phil works with SMEs, business founders and entrepreneurs worldwide and across a range of business and industry sectors. He advises clients on contentious matters in respect of;

  • Trade mark and copyright infringement
  • Confidential information and trade secrets
  • Design rights
  • Database rights
  • Keyword disputes
  • Breach of contract
  • Contractual disputes with associated IP issues

Phil deals with all aspects of IP disputes, from the pre-action stage (when no one is yet suing or being sued) through to litigation in the High Court and IPEC (Intellectual Property Enterprise Court) or settlement.

Clients value his work-ethic, capacity to understand their business and the thorough approach he takes to identifying the most effective legal and commercial route to resolving disputes

Phil has been at Waterfront since qualifying in May 2020. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Oxford University.

With a keen interest in the application of intellectual property law to developing technologies, Phil has contributed to reports published by the Law Society on blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) and is a member of the Society for Computers and Law, Tech London Advocates and IPSoc.

Recent Work

  • Assisting a client in the video game industry in a multi-jurisdictional dispute involving UK, Chinese and Hong Kong entities, in respect of UK and EU design rights, trade marks and breach of contract.
  • Representing a financial services boutique in a multi-million-pound claim in the High Court for misuse of confidential information and infringement of trade secrets.
  • Advising a designer on its UK unregistered design rights and negotiating a favourable settlement with a well-known high-street jewellery retailer.
  • Preparing and issuing claims for trade mark infringement and passing off in the Intellectual Property and Enterprise Court (IPEC) for clients in various sectors including IT outsourcing.
  • Advising a multinational company based in Europe on a complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency in respect of misleading adverts by a competitor.
