Legal 500 2022
Waterfront and its solicitors have been highly ranked by The Legal 500 international legal guide.
The 2022 edition of The Legal 500, which has just been published, ranks Waterfront in its Intellectual Property: Trademarks, Copyright and Design; Venture Capital; and IT and Telecoms categories.
Waterfront’s intellectual property lawyers Piers Strickland, Matthew Harris and Phil Leonard are all highlighted in The Legal 500. It calls Piers “robust and tenacious’’ and “exceptional’’ and praises his work on trade secrets and copyright infringement claims in the financial services sector. The guide describes Matthew as “quick, sharp and thoughtful’’ with “an outstanding knowledge of IP law’’ and draws attention to his specialist agrochemicals knowledge.
The Legal 500 also mentions Waterfront’s work in recent passing off proceedings involving Microsoft and says it provides “a very focused and value-driven service to its clients’’.
The guide describes Waterfront’s “deep expertise in venture capital topics’’ and the “fantastic service’’ it provides for entrepreneurs. It says the firm’s venture capital team is “professional yet compassionate’’ and “reliable, responsive, creative, collaborative and communicative’’. It singles out Matthew Cunningham and Angus Young for special praise and emphasises Matthew’s strength in negotiations and impressive roster of clients.
The Waterfront IT and telecoms team is commended for having exceptional knowledge of the tech sector. The Legal 500 says the team is quick to recognise the legal requirements of businesses and skilled at providing practical solutions to issues.
World Trademark Review 2021
Waterfront has been named in the World Trademark Review 1000 (WTR 1000) list for the third successive year. The WTR 1000 research directory focuses exclusively on trademark practices and practitioners and provides a comprehensive resource for those seeking world-class legal trademark representation.
Highlighting Waterfront’s IP expertise, the guide references the firm’s streamlined, partner-led offering that is fast becoming one of London’s premier sources of “high-quality, specialist IP advice”.
Waterfront compared extremely favourably to other medium-sized IP solicitor firms, with the guide referring to the firm’s easy-going attitude, commercial nous and tactical awareness.
In addition, Waterfront’s trademark offering was described as a force to be reckoned with, reflected by the firm’s recent caseload which includes an infringement matter on behalf of the Financial Times; acting in litigation on behalf of Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Scratch Meals; and a range of brand protection issues for Haribo.
Waterfront are delighted to announce that IP Team Associate Matthew Siddaway has been included as a Rising Star in the United Kingdom by the IP Stars directory in their 2020/21 individual rankings. He was involved in a number of high profile IP litigation matters conducted by Waterfront in the last year including the CJEU reference in the PMS “Squeezamals” case. IP Team co-heads Matthew Harris and Piers Strickland, are also once again identified in the 2020/21 rankings as “Trade mark stars.

We are delighted to be recognised once again in the 2021 edition of Chambers and Partners. The IP team is described as "very thoughtful, responsive” and one client commented that they are “always mangage to get disputes resolved quickly with good items helpful in explaining things to non-experts."
Joint team heads Matthew Harris and Piers Strickland are also directly recognised as notable practitioners. We are delighted that Waterfront’s IP team have moved up two tiers for non-patent IP in the Legal 500 2021. The 'cost effective' intellectual property team are described as ‘Comprehensive and sharp’. Piers Strickland is described as a ’pragmatic and knowledgeable practitioner who delivers a great product for his clients at a very reasonable price point.’ with Matthew Harris being recognised for his domain name expertise, as well as his IP knowledge.

We celebrate a new entry this year for corporate partner Angus Young, who is ranked in Venture Capital: Corporate and Commercial, alongside Matthew Cunningham who heads up the team. The team are praised for taking 'great care on a professional and personal level'. Contentious IP work and litigation are described as the specialties of the intellectual property team, who have been listed for the first time as a whole practice area this year. Their service is described as 'hands-on' and 'highly cost effective', along with mentions of a number of client wins for the team - such as UEFA and PMS International Group. Matthew Harris is particularly commended for his 'strategic creativity' and described as one of the best litigators in the United Kingdom.

Our intellectual property team retained their ranking this year and were noted as 'litigators with a strong focus on the technology sector and experience handling High Court and IPEC proceedings'. Their assists on trade mark, copyright, database and patent litigation are also mentioned. Our patent lawyers are experts in achieveing positive outcomes for our clients.
Notable IP litigator, Piers Strickland continues to be ranked both in the UK and Global directory and is described as 'strong across all areas including negotiation, strategic thinking and commercial awareness' . A mention of his work as solicitor advocate, in which he deals with a number of core rights, is also included.

We celebrate a new entry this year for our corporate team in Venture Capital, Corporate and Commercial. The team are described as having 'excellent understanding of what it takes to work with start-ups where agility is required'. Special mention goes to our Head of Corporate Matthew Cunningham who is described as 'first-rate', with clients commending his 'attentive and thoughtful approach' in their feedback.
